getting to aberdeen & Grampian, scotland
|
By car
The main traffic routes into Aberdeen are the A90 from the South, Dundee, Edinburgh and Perth, and the A96 from Inverness and the North. The A90 is entirely dual carriageway south of Aberdeen; the A96 has stretches of dual carriageway. Like many major cities, Aberdeen is becoming congested with traffic and the rush hour is best avoided if possible.
There is an alternative and very scenic route from the south through Glenshee and Royal Deeside. Take the A93 north all the way from Perth. (linked to Glasgow from the M80/A9 and to Edinburgh by the M90)
By coach
First class roads south to Edinburgh and Glasgow and onward carry fast coach services linking Aberdeen with the UK's major cities. Competitive return fares, using Travelcard schemes, make coach travel popular with students. The table below shows both Standard and Student Discounted prices offered by National Express at the time of writing. A Student Travel Card (Cost £12 covering a 3 year period) is available from most coach stations.
The main coach and bus station is located in Guild Street, next to the railway station. This is close to the centre of Aberdeen and five minutes walk from Marischal College. You will need a taxi or bus to get to the Old Aberdeen campus or the Medical School. Taxis to Old Aberdeen cost around £5.00. Some coach services do not use the main coach station and pick up/drop off passengers at other sites near to the city centre.
By train
Rail services connect Aberdeen both north and south. There are regular direct trains to London and services from Edinburgh and Glasgow link with other mainline routes. Inverness, the scenic West Coast and the Highlands are reached northwards.
